Self Sacrifice And It’s Role In Comic Media

Tragic backstories, incredible feats, super powers and self sacrifice, those are the things needed to create any superhero. Whether they’re male or female, black or white or any shade in between, super powered people need those qualities to really be considered heroes. Which is something that I find kind of absurd, and I’ll tell you why, self sacrifice? Why is that on the list? Look at any superhero and at one point or another they have sacrificed themselves for the greater good, every single one. The really sad part is that some of them did it in terrible runs (Civil War II) or it didn’t really have any effect (Spider-Man). This also flies in the face of the death problem in comics. How someone can die and you just have to wait about a year before they’re back in printing. Everyone has done it, at one point or another. This week I’m going to take a look at some of the pointless sacrifices in modern comics and highlight some that I believe to be rightfully deserved.

Let’s start with the bad…

*This post will be photo heavy. I apologize in advance*

CIVIL WAR II

Let’s run down the body count of the heroes involved in Civil War II and what it meant:

War Machine: He sided with Captain Marvel and had his spine punched out of his body THROUGH his armour by Thanos. He died to give Tony and Carol a reason to fight.

Bruce Banner: Died by Clint Barton firing a specifically designed arrow through his head. He died to increase the stakes on both sides as Clint sided with Tony and She Hulk (Jennifer Walters, Bruce Banner’s cousin) sided with Carol.

Tony Stark: Died to allow Riri Williams to take up his position and add more diversity to the Avengers. He isn’t technically dead, just in a coma.

Rhodey’s Death at the hands of Thanos

Rhodey and Bruce’s deaths served no actually purpose except for to antagonize the sides against each other. In the original Civil War, Goliath (Bill Foster) was killed by the rogue Thor clone, Ragnarok, and both sides immediately stopped fighting. They held a funeral for him so they could pay their respects and refused to fight on the day of his funeral. Bruce was killed and the only thing that happened was Hawkeye went on trial for it, a trial in which he was acquitted.

Tony’s death served to introduce us to Riri and allow her the space to take up his mantle. Instead of Jarvis or Friday, she has a Tony Stark AI imbedded in her armour, which can also project a 3D model, that helps her with her tasks. Tony’s was the only death that served an actual purpose and like I said before, he isn’t actually dead.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN/ SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN

This one might confuse some, but I did like the Superior Spider-Man run. That being said, I also recognize that it was a completely ridiculous death and we all knew it wasn’t permanent. In Amazing Spider-Man #700, Otto Octavius succeeded in switching his and Peter’s consciousnesses. Otto was left in Peter’s superpowered younger body, and Peter was stuck in Otto’s older dying body. Before he passed, Peter instilled in Otto his sense of responsibility and his memories, swapping his place in the memories for Otto’s. Otto realizes the error of his villainous ways and vows that Peter is not leaving the City and it’s people in the hands of a villain. Throughout the beginning of the run you are led to believe that this change is permanent and that we are going to have to get used to this new Spider-Man, but that’s not the case. At the end of one of the earliest issues, we are shown a spectral Peter alive and fighting in Otto’s subconscious so that he might regain control of his body. While the whole run was great and gave us some great Spider-Man moments, for me, it felt like there was a giant ticking clock on every issue counting down until Peter regains control. Not really spoiler alert at all… he does, and Otto makes the final sacrifice to let Peter retain his body and duties as Spider-Man.

Peter instilling his values and beliefs on Otto Octavius prior to his death

Peter’s death appeared to be permanent, for all intents and purposes he was gone and he wasn’t coming back. I do believe that Marvel received a LOT of flack for this decision which is what prompted the return so quickly. I cannot say for sure, but normally someone isn’t returned to life so quickly after a run, it takes some time. Wolverine’s recent resurrection via the Space Stone, is a prime example of this.

SUPERMAN

The Death of Superman… What. A. PUBLICITY STUNT! I was a whopping 2 years old when DC Comics pulled this event out of their ass to sell more copies of their Action Comics title, over six million copies to be exact. It was ranked as the top selling comic in 1992 from any single publisher. Superman comic sales had been on the decline for several years following some very lackluster arcs and more interesting characters getting their time in the spotlight. The original idea was for Superman to marry Lois lane, but when the television show Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman produced an arc of the same type, the writing team wanted to do something different. They decided to kill the big blue boy scout which was completely unheard of at the time; this arc also marks the first inclusion of Doomsday into Superman mythology. DC Comics gave the writers and artists the go ahead and the death of one of their flagship characters was crafted. It involves Clark’s first encounter with Doomsday and his sacrifice to stop the monster. After going blow for blow across the majority of the United States, the fight ended up in Metropolis where the final few punches were thrown.

Superman’s Death

The arc ended with Superman and Doomsday both delivering a fatal blow to the other and the Man of Steel falling to his enemy. A funeral was held for him, his adoptive father suffered a fatal heart attack at the news, and he was buried under a massive monument to him. Thing is, he wasn’t dead. He was in a coma, where he remained until one of the imposter Supermen, claiming to be him reborn, stole his body and hid it in the Fortress of Solitude. This is also where we were given the Black suit fans were clamoring for in Justice League, as well as that God awful mullet that he sported for nearly a decade…but we just won’t talk about that. This death, like the others I’ve mentioned was just a pointless publicity stunt. There was NO WAY that DC Comics was going to kill one of their Trinity, and even if they did, not leave him dead. Before the end of the run, Superman is back to life and kicking ass with his Tennessee Tophat (mullet) in tow.

DESERVED SACRIFICES

JOHNNY STORM aka HUMAN TORCH

I will say, I’ve never really been a fan of the Fantastic Four. It has nothing to do with me disliking them or their powers, I just never got into their stories as a kid. I have seen all the movies… ugh. But when I heard of Johnny Storm’s death at the conclusion of the Three storyline, I was intrigued as to the circumstances and how it was handled. The basic rundown of the arc is that there were three events that the Fantastic Four needed to stop, due to these events happening simultaneously, they split the team. Reed and Sue were off doing their own mission and Johnny and Ben were left to deal with the Cult of the Negative Zone. The Cult had infiltrated the Baxter Building and opened a portal to the negative zone unleashing an Annihilation Wave through the portal at Johnny, Ben (currently de-powered) and the children of the future foundation. Franklin Richards managed to use his powers to kill the insectoids that had come through and with the help of the other children, they deduced the only way to close the portal was to do it from the Negative Zone side. Whoever wen through with that would never come back. Ben began to step through the portal saying he would be able to hold them off long enough to close the portal and for the kids to say bye to Reed and Sue for him. Johnny grabbed Ben and threw him back into the building, stepping through the portal and hitting the over ride to close the portal. As the portal closed the last thing the kids and Ben saw was Johnny igniting himself and declaring that he wasn’t scared of the million to one odds.

Johnny accepting the odds

Like I said, I was not as familiar with the Fantastic Four as i am with other heroes, but this is something that sticks. Johnny sacrificed himself to save his best friend, his niece, nephew, and a bunch of other children. Not to mention the whole universe! The Annihilation Wave numbered in the billions and would not be able to be stopped easily. Respect to the writers for this, it really helped to show that underneath his brash exterior johnny cares deeply. Johnny obviously didn’t stay dead, but his death lasted for a while.
*Following the reading of Johnny’s Last Will and Testament, wherein he asked Spider-Man to take his place on the team, Spider-Man joined the Fantastic Four and received his future foundation suit.*

Johnny’s final stand

BARRY ALLEN aka THE FLASH

Barry Allen is the fastest man alive, and it’s his speed that earned him one of the most memorable deaths in comics. During the storyline for Crisis on Infinite Earths, Barry was retired from being the Flash and living in the 30th century with his wife. As the Anti-Monitor began his attack on the multiverse, a series of natural disasters began occurring in the future. Barry returned to the 20th century to warn his friends that something was wrong because despite the futuristic technology created to stop them, the natural disasters continued to occur. As he arrived and was about to warn Batman, Barry was pulled into the Antimatter Universe by the Anti-Monitor. Barry was tortured by Psycho Pirate and forced to watch as the Antimatter cannon was prepared to fire at his universe. Barry managed to break free by using Psycho Pirate to turn the Anti-monitor’s servants against him. He began to run around the canon so fast that he was able to strip the outer casing off destroying the canon. Barry needed to run so incredibly fast to accomplish this feat, that he disintegrated and absorbed into the Speed Force. Barry’s sacrifice single handedly allowed for the heroes to triumph over the Anti-Monitor and win the battle. Due to him being absorbed by the Speed Force, there were no remains to bury. A funeral was held in his honour with a gravestone placed in new York City. Barry’s sacrifice was known the world over and served as the catalyst for Wally West (Kid Flash at the time) to take up his mentor’s mantle and become the new Flash.

Barry beginning to unravel the Anti-Monitor’s canon

Barry’s sacrifice is probably the most influential death in comics as a whole. His willingness to sacrifice himself to protect not only his friends and family but the entire multiverse is what cements Barry as one of the best heroes ever created.

Barry destroys the canon and dissolves into the Speed Force

*Following Barry’s death, he was absorbed into the Speed Force and became a bolt of Speed Force Lightning. This bolt traveled back in time and was the same one that struck Barry all those years ago giving him his powers. Yes. Barry gave himself his Flash powers.*

GREEN ARROW aka OLIVER QUEEN

Oliver Queen/Green Arrow has sky-rocketed into popularity with the show Arrow starring Stephen Amell in the title role. Most people don’t know how massively different the television Oliver and the comics Oliver are form each other. Television Oliver is much more of a Batman style, Dark and Brooding and very little humour. Comic book Oliver is much more outspoken, humourous and political. Ollie’s death may not have been the most glamorous or the most impactful but it still shows us a death done right. Oliver was recruited by the NSA and asked to infiltrate and eco-terrorist cell known as Eden Corps. After he earned their trust, he began a romantic relationship with the group’s leader Hyrax. Through his connections Ollie learned that Hyrax was loading abomb onto a plane bound for Metropolis. The yield of the bomb was large enough to destroy the City itself and everyone in it. Ollie boarded the plane and through a nasty firefight and battle with another undercover agent, Ollie was the only one alive. He attempted to disarm the bomb, but his arm became trapped in the device. Superman arrived on the plane and tried to help, but Ollie had triggered a fail-safe which would detonate the device if his arm was removed. As the plane neared Metropolis the only option appeared for Superman to dismember Ollie by ripping his arm off. Not wanting to become an amputee Ollie told him know and removed his hand from the device triggering the explosion. Superman was largely unharmed by the explosion but Oliver was completely vaporized. With nothing left to bury, a small ceremony was held in his honour with his son Connor firing an arrow into the air, where it landed marking Oliver’s final resting place. Connor decided to take up his father’s crusade and become the new Green Arrow.

Oliver refuses to let Superman rip his arm off

Oliver’s death was one of the events that didn’t affect many, but those it did, it hit hard. Hal Jordan, specifically, was hit very hard by Oliver’s death. So much so that when Hal went crazy and became Parallax, he used his power to bring Oliver back from the dead. This new Oliver lacked his soul, which was still in heaven and became very political in his vigilantism. Oliver may not be the most liked but he is by far one of the most left leaning heroes. His adventures had started becoming more and more about defending the disenfranchised and the downtrodden like Robin Hood, the character he was modeled after.

Death in comics is not permanent, or rarely is. Certain characters have remained dead for years, but most of them find their way back in one way or another, whether it’s a complete universe reset, Alien shapeshifters that kidnapped them years before, time travel or magic our Heroes tend to not stay dead for very long. I don’t mind when heroes bite the bullet and fall in their pursuit, I think it actually makes them more realistic. It shows that they aren’t invincible Gods that can shrug off any damage and keep going. That being said, if you’re going to kill of a character, do it for the right reasons and by God… DO IT WELL!

See you next week!

Office of Naval Intelligence – Halo’s CIA

This morning as I was drinking my piping hot cup of “Canadian As F*ck, eh?” courtesy of Black Rifle Coffee Company, I stumbled across a video by the Youtuber, HiddenXperia, on his coverage of ONI’s betrayal of the Master Chief. As an avid fan of the entire Halo series, like bought Xbox over Playstation specifically for Halo, this is something that I had never heard of. I always knew that ONI were a shady bunch of people, but this ranks up there with Umbrella Corporation and their experiments on workers without their consent. This week is going to be devoted to some of the more “shady shit” ONI has done within the Halo universe and how they’re basically the CIA with a whole universe to play with.

OFFICE BREAKDOWN

The Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) is broken down in various sections which each handle different matters.

Section Zero – Internal Affairs and Investigations (private police force within the UNSC)
Section One – Military Intelligence
Section Two – Propaganda and Information (Spin doctors to keep/distort public perception)
Section Three – Special Projects (SPARTAN Programs, Blacklist Prisons, Experimentations)

This article will primarily be focused on ONI Section Three and some of its nefarious dealings.

SPARTAN PROGRAMS

It’s no secret that the Spartan II project, is the first foray of ONI’s begin into shady practices (technically it was first Project ORION but we’ll stick with the SPARTAN II). I’ll give a brief rundown of their involvement in the Spartan II initiative.

Master Chief after he crash lands on Alpha Halo

As Dr. Halsey built on the Carver Findings and proposed her own potential outcome to the scenario, she petitioned ONI section three to allow her funding and free reign to create the next wave of super soldiers. ONI had conducted it’s own analysis of the Carver Findings (hypotheses presented by Dr. Elias Carver on the breakout of Insurrection) and come to roughly the same conclusion that Dr. Halsey had. They therefore agreed to fund her program and to maintain the secrecy, they utilized all four branches of ONI to mask the project. As the project began it’s earliest stages, Dr. Halsey declared that child recruits are easiest to indoctrinate and to undergo the radical surgeries required. ONI attached Lieutenant Keyes to Dr. Halsey as she moved around human controlled space selecting recruits. When the project finally began, ONI operatives abducted each of the children and replaced them with a rapid grown flash clone. All of these clones would die within the year making the recruits to the program effectively ghosts.

Not only did ONI directly create the Spartan IIs, but they also “acquired” several of them for specific purposes. One of these purposes was the formation of Black Team. This was a small squad of Spartan IIs outfitted with modified armour that carried out black ops missions directly for ONI high command. They carried out assassination missions and asset acquirement missions for ONI against humans/covenant/flood/ and prometheans. On their final mission to obtain a Forerunner artifact, all contact with Black Team was lost. Black Team was found by Blue team and noted as “Missing in Action” on Installation 03. All Spartans are noted as “Missing in Action” instead of “Killed in Action” to keep up the appearance that Spartans never die (this was a practice implemented by ONI).

Spartan Black Team

In addition to Black Team, ONI also acquired 3 other Spartan IIs which they formed into Gray Team. Gray Team was meant for one purpose, to infiltrate far behind enemy lines and cause whatever havoc they could without support from any friendly units. This led to extensively long missions in small quarters which is why the team was limited to the three “most independent and individualistic” of the Spartan II recruits.

ONI also “acquired” Spartan 051 Kurt when he was recovered from deep space following a malfunction by his EVA pack. He was officially listed as MIA but was recovered by Colonel Ackerson of ONI. He was given the surname of Ambrose promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander and was tasked with training the Spartan III recruits on the planet Onyx. Kurt sacrificed himself to hold back the covenant invasion force and allow Blue Team and Team Katana to escape into the Forerunner Shield World at the core of Onyx. He detonated 2 Fenris nuclear Warheads which vaporized the covenant invading force and the rest of the planet that was not guarded by the shield world.

KILO FIVE

Kilo Five is one of the more secretive things that ONI has done. Kilo Five is a secret Blacks Ops team that is run by a former Spartan II and serves a guerilla hit and run squad. It’s field commander is a Spartan II and the rest of the squad is made up of 3 ODST Troops, Professor Evan Phillips and a Smart AI known as Black Box. The main purpose of Kilo Five was the start an insurrection amongst the various Sangheili (Elite) factions following the Schism (when the Elites and various other Covenant allied with Humanity against the brutes and their forces). Kilo Five answered directly to Margaret Parangosky, the Commander in Chief of ONI. They operated with complete impunity using whatever means necessary to accomplish their missions.

Kilo Five

Now that we’ve covered most of the stuff the people know about ONI let’s talk about the things they don’t know…

NIGHTFALL

In Halo: Nightfall, Jameson Locke and his ONI Remote Tactical Strike Team stopped a Sangheili bio weapon attack on the colony of Sedra, with minimal casualties. As they completed this mission, they noticed a rare element which was the base of the bio weapon. The element was completely unique to a single shard of the Alpha Halo which was destroyed by the Master Chief at the end of Halo: Combat Evolved. Locke and the remaining uninfected members of his team, partnered with Sedran Colonial command and their leader Colonel Randall Aiken to venture to the shard and obtain a sample of the element to manufacture a cure. The expedition was attacked by a large colony of Lekgolo worms (drone organisms that make up the Hunters in the Halo game series) which are attracted to electrical signals. As the expedition forces dwindle, Locke and private Macer managed to make it to a small 2 seater craft called a “tug” and managed to escape the shard. The rest of the team were killed either by infighting or by the worm colony with colonel Aiken sacrificing himself using a HAVOK nuclear warhead to destroy the Alpha Shard and the Lekgolo colony. When Locke and Macer return to Sedra and manufactured the cure, ONI whisked them away “for immediate debriefing”. Nothing is known about what happened to Macer, however following the mission,Locke left ONI and enlisted in the now declassified Spartan program.

Nightfall release poster

Nightfall wasn’t that bad of a covert mission, except that ONI completely covered up the bio weapon attack, citing Boren’s syndrome as the cause of the sicknesses, disavowed those who died on the shard and whisked Macer away to Black Site facility to never be heard from again.

BENJAMIN GIRAUD

Benjamin Giraud was a civilian contractor working with ONI and their section two office. He was a field reporter that worked with the UNSC to provide front line news about the war effort to the folks back home. After he witnessed the Master Chief “Save Humanity” during the battle of Mombassa in 2552 (Halo 2 campaign), he decided to discover the truth behind the Chief so that people would be able to know their hero. He worked tirelessly to arrange interviews with various individuals to get the story on the Chief in the year of 2558. As he went through the list of contacts provided by ONI and the ones he found himself, he discovered that all of the ONI contacts were plants meant to muddle up the information and hide the truth. As he discovered the cover up, ONI threatened that they would ruin him if he pursued this story. Deciding that the people needed to know the truth about their saviour, he went against ONI and continued the investigation on his own. He discovered that the Master Chief and the other Spartans were nothing more than children who had been abducted by ONI retrieval teams and indoctrinated by the UNSC. Appalled at what he discovered, he decided to expose the cover up and show the people of Earth Space what ONI had done. He arranged an interview on a talkshow on the ECB News channel hosted by Charles Kesler where he would reveal the entire story to humanity so that ONI would lose it’s support. Unknown to Giraud, ONI (through their Section two office) controlled the news channel. Prior to Giraud’s interview, ONI arranged for witnesses to be aired refuting every single point and fact of proof that Giraud had. When he came on the air and delivered his evidence, he was seen as a crack pot conspiracy theorist and completely discredited. Following the interview, he was apprehended by an ONI security team from section zero, and taken to their Midnight facility (a top secret high security black site prison hidden in the Asteroid belt). Giraud was sentenced to solitary confinement in Cube B-349 (cell B-349) where his mind slowly began to unravel due to the isolation and not having any human contact for weeks on end. He would punch the walls of his cell until his hands were bloody, rub his head along the wall until it bled and smear it around the walls. The last mention of Giraud states that he is still in his cell at the Midnight facility and the use of knockout gas is frequently required to stop his self harm.

ONI FLOOD EXPERIMENTS

This is the crème of the low for ONI. They condoned experiments with the Flood on human prisoners and covenant prisoners of war. ONI backed a crazy scientist, Major John Smith, who deliberately infected several human prisoners and infected Elite prisoners. He was infecting the prisoners to attempt to find a cure for the disease and to try and weaponize the Flood virus for use in a theater of war. The containment was broken and the entire ship, The Mona Lisa, became infected with the exception of Smith and the elite, that had been nicknamed by the Marine retrieval team, Henry. As the team enacts the “Cole Protocol” (scrub all Navigational data and if possible either make a blind slipspace jump away from Earth or scuttle the ship) they are notified they have 20 minutes before a nearby UNSC ship, the Foulcault, will deliberately destroy the ship to prevent the spread of the infection. Smith hijacks the pelican the retrieval team arrived on and leaves the ship to save himself. Seargent Lopez, her remaining crew and Henry destroy the NAV data and damage the engines to stop the ship from going anywhere. As they attempt to evac they are attacked by the flood infected prisoners. the rest of the team fall to the infection with the exception of Lopez, Henry and MacGraw. MacGraw takes one of the two escape pods and flees the ship leaving Lopez and Henry to fight over the last one as their time runs out and the UNSC Foulcault scuttles the ship. It is later revealed that the Foulcault was operating under direct orders from ONI high command to scuttle the ship and leave no trace of their experiments.

Lopez v. Henry

These are just a few examples of the “shady shit” that ONI pulled throughout it’s tenure. They are also responsible for the creation of the MJOLNIR power armour and several advanced weapons utilized by the UNSC. Mostly though, it’s obvious that for every thing they admit to doing or being involved with, there is probably another 100 that they swept under the rug and eliminated all trace of.

That’s it for this week’s post! it’s pretty short compared to some of the other ones I’ve posted but there isn’t much info on ONI and their nefarious dealings… I wonder why… See you next week!

Abeloth – The Terror Of The Star Wars Universe

I was going to write a post about the Oscars on Sunday night and how Black Panther didn’t actually get snubbed like most of the twitter-verse thinks; but, I figure enough people are covering that so I don’t need to. Instead, this this week I’m going to write about something I recently became aware of in the Star Wars universe from a YouTube video I watched by EckhartsLadder titled 5 Scariest Things in Star Wars Legends. If you’re a fan of Star Wars, Halo and other related Sci-Fi material, I recommend you check their channel out.

The topic I’ve chosen for today is Abeloth, an ancient evil Force creature that is uber powerful and has a penchant for consuming Force sensitive beings. It should be noted that while this was considered canon until 2012 when the House of Mouse purchased Lucasfilms, once the deal went through, Disney disavowed all the Expanded Universe material. They provided it a new title of “Legends” and concentrated on the core films, Clone Wars TV series, and the films and shows released since the acquisition went through. They have started slowly including some of the old Expanded Universe content into their canon universe, but it seems unlikely that Abeloth will make it there anytime soon.

WHO IS ABELOTH?

Abeloth was also known in the Expanded Universe as The Bringer of Chaos and Beloved Queen of the Stars, despite what she may have turned into, she actually started out as a benevolent being.

The Ones, Son with Mortis Dagger, Father & Daughter

Over a hundred thousand years before the battle of Yavin (100,000 + BBY) Abeloth was created as a servant to the Ones. The Ones are the physical manifestations of the Force, there’s the Son who represents the Dark Side, the Daughter who represents the Light Side and the Father who represents the Balance between the two. Abeloth was created as a mortal woman known as the Servant and helped to keep the peace between the Son and Daughter. As her life continued she aged and became known as The Mother, a new addition to the family. As she continued to age and her family remained ageless, she began to worry about losing them and what she could do to grant herself immortality. In a desperate attempt to remain with her family she drank from the Font of Power (A Nexus of Dark Force Energy) and bathed in the Pool of Knowledge (A Force Nexus), her actions caused her to become insane and transformed her into the Dark Side entity known as Abeloth.

Mad with her power and not wanting her family to leave, she demanded they bow before her. Horrified at what had happened, the Father stepped in and took his Children from Abeloth. They abandoned her on their unknown jungle planet and resettled on Mortis (the planet Anakin, Obi Wan and Ahsoka were stranded on for days during the Clone Wars TV series). Fearing the power she now had, the Son and Daughter offered their knowledge to an ancient race that helped to build Centerpoint Station and Sinkhole Station.

Centerpoint Station was a massive space station with a powerful enough tractor beam to move planets and other celestial bodies like Black Holes through space.

Sinkhole Station was smaller than Centerpoint Station but still massive in scale and was used to hold the Black holes in place.

“The Maw” A prison of Black Holes in the Kessel Sector
Map showing Location of Maw and Kessel Sector

The Son and Daughter used the stations to manufacture a spherical prison of black holes surrounding Abeloth’s planet to keep her contained and to stop outside people from discovering her. They named this area of space “The Maw”. The Maw is located in the Kessel sector of the Star Wars universe and played a large part in Han Solo’s reputation.

*It is very likely ‘The Maelstrom’ from Solo: A Star Wars Story is actually the outer edge of the Maw. The Creature they encountered is called a Summa-Verminoth, which are large space faring entities with numerous tentacles and eyes that consume all material they can get their hands on *

WHY IS ABELOTH SO SCARY?

A Massive Dark Force entity that is so powerful she has to be contained on her own planet in a prison made of black holes? Still not enough? Okay… How about every time Abeloth broke free of her prison, she brought untold destruction onto the galaxy until the Daughter and Son returned from their exile to force her back into her prison. How was she able to break free? When the “Current of the Force” (the flow of time) was altered, it provided enough of a break in the universal energies for her to escape and bring chaos and destruction down on the galaxy. This cycle of breakout, destroy, imprisonment and waiting until breaking out again went on for thousands of years until the death of the Ones in 21BBY. It wasn’t until the years following the Galactic Civil War that Jedi Grandmaster, Luke Skywalker, discovered Abeloth and the threat she possessed.

Not only is Abeloth a living breathing uber powerful entity that likes to cause widespread destruction and havoc, but she also is able to inhabit the “Beyond Shadows”. This is a realm that powerful force users are able to access by separating their minds from their bodies (like Dr. Stange with Astral Projection). She would instill in the Force user a “need of companionship” which would compel the user to enter the Maw and find Sinkhole Station. Once there, they would enter the Realm Beyond Shadows and Abeloth would consume their life essence, killing them. There was a time when Luke Skywalker and his son Ben Skywalker discovered Sinkhole Station and entered the Realm Beyond Shadows. During his first trip into the Realm Beyond Shadows, Luke saw Abeloth, but when she beckoned him to come closer he refused and left the realm with his son unharmed.

Abeloth in the Realm Beyond Shadows

IS SHE STILL AROUND?

So, after Luke and Ben were tempted by Abeloth they left Sinkhole Station and the Maw entirely. As her powers grew, she began to cause a sort of “psychosis” among Force users in an attempt to draw more to the Maw so she could feed off their life essence. Sinkhole Station was beginning to fail because it’s counter point, Centerpoint Station, had been destroyed in the Yuuzhan Vong War. This failure allowed for Abeloth’s influence to felt by Force users across the galaxy instead of just within the Maw itself. To combat this threat, Luke Skywalker and some members of the new Jedi Order allied with the reborn Sith to end Abeloth’s threat once and for all.

The attack force confronted her on her planet at the center of the Maw and pursued her into a cave system. As they fought she continued to use Force projections to try and convince them to lay down their arms, to no avail. Eventually, the Sith warriors present tried to betray the Jedi and imprison Abeloth under a control web. Abeloth broke free and fled through the cave system with the strike force pursuing. She was confronted again by Luke and attempted to use illusions to trick him into seeing his long dead love Ming and his close friend Dyon Staad. Luke saw through the illusion and stabbed Abeloth masquerading his friend in the chest. As she died, Abeloth tried to use one last massive force wave to kill Luke and the strike team, but it failed. All the Force sensitive individuals under her control were released and her presence disappeared. In the aftermath, it was discovered that Luke had indeed killed his friend and Abeloth had fled her prison and the Maw using Staad’s likeness as her own.

Abeloth vs. the Strike Force

She continued to terrorize the galaxy and plague Luke for many years. One of the Sith strike team members even tried to use the Pool of Knowledge to find out where she was. When he submerged himself in the pool, he succumbed to the raw power of the Force and began to turn into a being similar to Abeloth.

She eventually used her powers to get herself elected as Chief of State, under the disguise of an individual called Kem. She had allied with the Sith and used her influence to subject the people of Coruscant to her rule. Luke and a Sith named Darth Krayt confronted her in the Realm Beyond Shadows and dueled her there. As her illusionary bodies were being destroyed across the galaxy she grew weaker and eventually Luke and Krayt defeated her.

Luke knew she could never be defeated by conventional means due to her immense power and resolved to find an ancient Force artifact called the “Mortis Dagger”. The Mortis Dagger is an ancient artifact created by the Father which is capable of killing the Ones and any other living beings, Abeloth included, it was last wielded by the Son on Mortis before his death in 21BBY.

Abeloth continued to plague the original Expanded Universe for several years until Disney’s purchase in 2012. Since then, her status has dropped into a legend but she still remains as one of the greatest terrors in the Star Wars universe. Hyperspace Madness, The Yuuzhan Vong, and Malachor V have nothing on her or her abilities. She is so powerful that only a singular artifact crafted by the physical embodiments of the Force itself can kill her, that makes her seriously OP. Not only is she crazy powerful but she looks creepy too. She resembles a very pale woman with white hair, a mouth stretching from ear to ear with razor sharp teeth and tentacles for fingers.

Abeloth’s true form

I’m not going to lie, a small part of me wants Kylo Ren and the First order to find her in Episode 9 and just get slapped by her to show that they’re nothing compared to the power of the Force itself.

That’s it for this week’s post. I’m hoping to get my YouTube channel up and running soon and turn some of the more popular posts into videos, so we’ll see how that goes. See you next week!

The Umbrella Corporation – Probably THE Most Evil Company In All Of Fiction

The Umbrella Corporation, a staple in the Resident Evil series and probably THE most evil corporation in all of fiction, why? well… let’s find out.

FOUNDING OF UMBRELLA

The Umbrella Corporation was originally founded as Umbrella Pharmaceuticals in late 1967 in the UK by Dr. Oswell E. Spencer, Dr. James Marcus & Dr. Edward Ashford.

Marcus and Spencer had become obsessed with a 19th century encyclopedia titled Natural History Conspectus. It was written by Henry Travis and detailed his journeys and contact with the Ndipaya tribe of West Africa and their folklore detailing a flower which can imbue great powers when consumed. Spencer and Marcus conducted several expeditions into the region and eventually discovered the flower. The Drs. along with Marcus’ student Brandon Bailey, discovered the flowers contained a mutagenic virus they would later dub “Progenitor”. Brimming with potential, Spencer made it his life goal to ensure the genesis of a new race of humans using this newly discovered progenitor virus. He founded Umbrella Pharmaceuticals alongside his long time friend Marcus and their mutual friend Ashford. On the face of things, Umbrella was a simple medicine manufacturing company, some of their most notable contributions were Adravil, Aqua Cure, Safsprin, and a common first aid spray to heal wounds. Under the surface the main goal of Umbrella was to further Spencer’s research into the advancement of humanity using Progenitor and to manufacture bio weapons to be sold for research money. One such project, became known as the “T-Virus”.

In the early 1970’s, Umbrella acquired Arklay laboratories and their samples of the Ebola virus. Officially, Arklay was using the virus samples to attempt to manufacture a cure; unofficially, they were mutating the virus to strengthen it’s applications and potential use as a bio-weapon. Throughout the early 70’s, Umbrella acquired several other subsidiary laboratories and their research for use in it’s bio-weapon research and manufacturing. They would contract each subsidiary to manufacture a specific medicine but use their collective research, which was deemed property of Umbrella, to further their bio-weapon research.

Progenitor flower

For each vaccine that the Umbrella Corporation produced, they also produced a strain of the virus that was resistent to it. Thus, ensuring them a global market. A large portion of their viral research was on specific viruses and bacteria outlawed by the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention. As Umbrella began to acquire more and more research firms, they also branched into other industries, always with an ulterior motive. Umbrella made a huge push into tourism and transportation who’s main purpose was the transportation of biological and viral weapons out of Africa. They also founded an Umbrella subsidiary company for defence manufacturing called Umbrella Industries that focused on weapons manufacturing and Anti-B.O.W (Bio Organic Weapon) weaponry.

In 1978, the T-Virus project began to move away from its original designation as a weapon of death when it was discovered that hosts infected and killed with the virus underwent severe mutations. The T-virus caused severe mutations in the host which rendered them alive in a mentally damaged, cannibalistic and homicidal state capable of strenuous activity even after death.

DISSENTION AMONGST THE FOUNDERS

As the success of Umbrella began to take shape, the founding members of the company became at odds with one another. Ashford was actually killed in a T-virus experiment that went awry in 1968. It is highly believed that Dr. Spencer had something to do with the accident, though no connection was ever proven.

Dr. Marcus grew very unpopular with the executive board of the company for his tendency to use executive trainees as guinea pigs in his biological experiments without consent. It got so bad that Umbrella Security Service (the company’s private police force) apprehended and executed him in 1988.

Dr. Alexander Ashford, the son of the Late Dr. Edward Ashford, did not take up his father’s work in virology and thus was not a threat to Spencer and his control of the company. Alexander’s daughter, Alexia, however, did follow in her grandfather’s footsteps and helped to restore the Ashford name to prominence. Spencer grew worried of the Ashford’s once more and both Alex and Alexia were infected with a version of the T-virus code named “Veronica”. They disappeared from public eye and were believed to be dead.

Dr, Brandon Bailey now a full fledged virologist and not just Marcus’ student, was overseeing operations in Africa with the production of the T-Virus and various other biological weapons. Despite his requests to be moved to another locale, he was kept in Africa as head of manufacturing and research until he was executed by the Umbrella Security Service in 1998 to prevent a “security breach”. Several other doctors and their descendants would die under suspicious circumstances, with no direct evidence ever implicating Spencer.

BIO ORGANIC WEAPONS

NEST Facility

In the early to mid 1980’s a rare but effective immunity to the T-virus was discovered in various populations around the world. T-Virus research was doubled as well as the production of new chimeric beasts dubbed “B.O.W” (Bio Organic Weapon) began. The B.O.Ws were utilized by many militaries around the world that Umbrella had infiltrated in an attempt to kill anyone with a natural immunity to the T-Virus. By this point in time, Umbrella had grown to be a massive global conglomerate that controlled many of the most powerful nations around the world. The Arklay laboratory was the main research installation for Umbrella USA until the construction of the NEST Facility in 1991. The NEST (renamed the HIVE in the film series) was a massive underground research facility on the outskirts of Raccoon City that specialized in work with the G-Virus. The G-Virus (Golgotha Virus) was a mutated viral strain of the original Progenitor virus that could reanimate dead tissue without the negative effects of the T-Virus. It would also bestow upon the host near superhuman abilities effectively granting them biological immortality.

Jealous of the success coming out of Umbrella USA and their NEST facility, the European branch of Umbrella began work on their Nemesis Project. Project Nemesis was designed to create an intelligent parasite that could circumnavigate the brain death and loss of intelligence caused by the T-Virus. Project Nemesis ran alongside the USA’s project Tyrant to develop a superhuman weapon. In 1998, both projects were merged to create the Nemesis T-Type, a hulking B.O.W that had an AI interface to allow remote control of its actions. The only known Nemesis T-Type was dubbed “The Pursuer”, it was killed by Jill Valentine and Carlos Olivera during the Raccoon City incident.

PRE RACCOON CITY INCIDENT

With the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 90’s, Umbrella aggressively expanded into Easter Europe and Northern Asia. they founded, trained and armed several branches of paramilitary forces all under the control of the Umbrella company for use in outbreak events. An anti-B.O.W training facility was established on Rockford Island and was overseen by Alfred Ashford, the grandson of Dr. Edward Ashford.

Umbrella developed an intelligence division which served to keep track on the various governments of the world and their plans. The intelligence arm of Umbrella planted moles in various governments around the world, one such mole, that was planted in the USA, was Albert Wesker.

Umbrella’s influence over the governments they were selling weapons and biological agents to was extremely prevalent. When plant No.57 in West Africa suffered an outbreak, the Umbrella Biohazard Countermeasure Service (UBCS), massacred everyone in the plant and the surrounding villages to prevent exposure. This cleansing was covered up by the government so nobody would know of Umbrella’s involvement. Similarly, when a human experiment went wrong at a hospital in the Arklay Mountains, there was no police investigation, no media outlet identified Umbrella as the culprit and the hospital was shut down in 1993.

In 1996, one reporter who was getting close to the truth of what was really going on, was murdered with his body being washed up on the shore of the Aimes River. No investigation was conducted into his murder and all his notes and evidence mysteriously disappeared.

RACCOON CITY INCIDENT

THE MANSION INCIDENT

By the time of the Raccoon City incident in 1998, Umbrella’s influence and power had begun to decline. The decline was attributed to 2 reasons:
1. Industrial Espionage with other companies and governments stealing Umbrella’s research.
2. Internal Destabilization from the constant fighting and back stabbing done by the Umbrella board.

In May of 1998, the facility in the Arklay Mountains had a containment breach. While the facility was quickly put on lockdown, sentient “Cerberus” B.O.Ws escaped and made their way through the mountains killing and turning hikers into zombies. These zombies then attacked and turned other civilians into zombies as well. The local law enforcement was unable to determine a cause of the deaths or stop them from piling up. They contacted the STARS (Special Tactics and Rescue Service), a paramilitary organization funded by Umbrella that operated independently of both law enforcement and military, to help stop the murders. Having retired from the military, Albert Wesker was now leader of an elite team of STARS operatives and was tasked by Umbrella with taking his squad into the mountains and allowing them to be killed. He was told to destroy any incriminating evidence linking the incident to Umbrella and record all combat encounters to observe the combat effectiveness of the T-virus infected hosts. Wesker faked his death and left with all the incriminating evidence he had found and fled to the rival biological tech company. Only 2 members of his team survived the ordeal, Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine.

OUTBREAK INCIDENT

Dr. Birkin, the head of the NEST facility underneath Raccoon City, devised a plan to leave Umbrella and hand himself, along with samples of the T-Virus and the G-Virus, over to the US military/government after he failed to impress his way into Dr. Spencer’s inner circle. Due to the deep influence of Umbrella, he devised a plan to ruin them and expose their nefarious acts around the world. In the weeks, leading up to his departure, Birkin dumped live samples of the T-Virus into various essential works around Raccoon City such as their Sewage Treatment Plant. This allowed for the T-Virus to infect the entire City in a matter of weeks. By mid September of 1998, the entire City was experiencing the effects of the T-Virus and the Raccoon City hospital was under strict quarantine. Dr. Birkin was killed when he released his “Hunter” B.O.Ws in the sewers of the city. An Umbrella Security Service team was sent to handle the problem and Birkin was killed in the crossfire. He used a vial of the G-Virus to mutate himself into a powerful monster that rampaged through the sewers and the city itself.

T-Virus

By this time, Umbrella had become aware of the contamination of Raccoon City and moved to cover up their involvement. They quarantined the entire city and attempted evacuate some of the remaining uninfected civilians. When the infection spread too rapidly, the Umbrella squads sent into the city were decimated. The remaining National Guard, Military and Umbrella forces retreated to their blockades and sealed the city shut. With the city sealed and all living people in the city presumed to be infected or soon to be, Umbrella decided to use this as a testing ground for some of their B.O.Ws. Umbrella Europe deployed the Nemesis project to eliminate any surviving STARS members or civilians in the city, to test its combat effectiveness and to avenge the disappearance of two other B.O.Ws sent in by the military to initially control the outbreak. When it became clear that the outbreak could not be contained, and project Nemesis was lost to some survivors in the city (Jill Valentine and Carlos Olivera), The President, Joint Chiefs, and the Security council opted to use and experimental fuel air bomb to destroy the city and all traces of the infection. An undercover Umbrella agent used his influence over Senator Ron Davis to push for the bomb to be used. On October 1, 1998, the fuel air bomb was deployed and the city was destroyed along with all evidence of Umbrella’s involvement in the outbreak incident.

UMBRELLA’S DECLINE

After the incident in Raccoon City, the United States government was no longer able to ignore the power that Umbrella had amassed. Congress voted to suspend Umbrella USA’s right to do business in the country and federalized all of their assets. With no evidence of the outbreak despite what some survivors were reporting to the media, the United States government was in very hot water over their bombing of the city. While several outlets were receiving interviews from survivors like Alyssa Ashcroft ( a field reporter with Raccoon City Press), the threat of bio-weaponry was covered up providing no excuse for the bombing. In response to the backlash received over the Raccoon City incident, the United States government formed the Anti-Umbrella Pursuit and Investigations Team. This team was focused on anti-B.O.W tactics and was given near unlimited power to operate within the US against bio weapons and outbreaks under the Anti-Virus Weapon Protocol No.7600.

As stock shares in Umbrella and its influence began to wain, Dr. Spencer (now the only surviving founding member) decided to shutter much of Umbrella’s viral weapons research and production. Umbrella’s African production facility was shut down and all staff eliminated to prevent a security breach.

In November after the Raccoon City incident, Umbrella’s facility on Sheena Island was destroyed along with their production facility for project TYRANT.

In December, the Umbrella training facility on Rockfort Island was attacked and destroyed by the Rival Company. The survivors fled to the Antarctic transport facility Umbrella had set up years before to distribute bio-weapons globally without interference from governments. As the survivors and the samples of the T-Virus they brought with them were deciding what to do, former STARS member and survivor of the Mansion Incident Chris Redfield, activated the facility’s self destruct system.

As the years ticked by, Umbrella found it hard to keep their employees in line. With their detention facilities on Rockfort and Sheena islands gone, and their research grinding to a halt, many employees began selling bio-weapons on the black market to make enough money to run from the company. The United States government was still covering up the bio-terror attacks, which were growing in frequency with the weapons making their way onto the black market. To combat this rise in bio-terrorism, the United States government formed the Federal Bioterrorism Commission to combat another threat on American soil should it ever arise.

Albert Wesker

In 2002, a terrorist named Morpheus Duvall raided Umbrella’s Paris facility and stole samples of the T-Virus as well as an experimental T+G Virus. The group then boarded a cargo ship as it was transporting illegal Hunter B.O.Ws to an unknown buyer in North America and commandeered the ship. The group threatened to fire missiles loaded with the T-Virus at large cities in both the USA and China unless they were paid 5 billion dollars. A coordinated effort between the US and Chinese governments resulted in a neutralization of the threat with no media coverage of the event.

By 2003, Umbrella had become a shell of its former self. Most of the nations of the world had withdrawn their support of the company and many of its subsidiaries were closed down. The final straw that broke the camel’s back was when their Caucasus facility suffered an outbreak. The surrounding villages were all burned to prevent further spread of the virus and Umbrella lost their super computer that had all of their research they amassed since the founding of the company. The United States Division of Umbrella was embroiled in a legal battle, which they almost won, in regards to the incident in Raccoon City. Due to the lack of physical evidence tying them to the outbreak and the cleansing of the city, Umbrella was nearly able to shift full blame to the government of the United States. It took a defected Albert Wesker, who had copied the super computer hard drive before the Caucasus facility was destroyed, making a covert deal to provide the US government with overwhelming evidence to convict Umbrella USA for a guilty verdict to be rendered. With Umbrella USA being found to have caused the incident and being found implicit in the “sanitation” of the infection, their stock prices plummeted and they were forced to declare bankruptcy due to compensation claims.

Umbrella Pharmaceuticals and the Umbrella Corporation were forced to declare bankruptcy following the verdict in the United States Supreme Court. American and Russian intelligence services issued a warrant for the capture of Dr. Spencer, though it was several years before he was found. He was killed by Albert Wesker in 2006 before he could stand trial for his actions.

With the bankruptcy of Umbrella their only division to remain active, if even for a brief period, was their Japanese location. It remained active until its liquidation in 2014 when no company would risk their reputation by purchasing it.

Umbrella Pharmaceuticals and the massive global conglomerate of Umbrella Corporation are without a doubt one of if not THE most evil corporations in all of fiction. Granted there are some like Oscorp from Spider-Man, Lex Corp. from DC Comics or even Abstergo Industries from Assassin’s Creed that are pretty brutal in their treatment of people; but, none of them compare on the scale of Umbrella. Umbrella essentially owned your research, you and anything you produced. Not to mention they reserved the right to kill you if necessary to prevent a “security breach” or even used you as a guinea pig for some new viral weapon they were testing without notifying you that you were being tested. They condoned the massacre of nearly an entire city to test some of their own mutated weapons, and they tried to cover it all up with a bomb that destroyed all evidence linking them to the incident. This is one company that I am happy has stayed firmly in the realm of fiction.

That was an extremely condensed version of the history of the Umbrella Corporation from Resident Evil fame. Any thought let me know in the comments. See you next week!

Cyclops – A Fallen Hero Reborn

Recently in Marvel Comics, Cyclops, famed leader of one of their most popular properties, The X-Men, has had a rough go. This week I’m going to dive into Cyclops as a character as well as what caused him to stray from his path as a hero and turn him into a fascist militant leader of Mutantkind.

Let’s start off with a rundown of his origins and his fall from leader to criminal.

Scott Summers aka Cyclops, first appeared in X-Men of September 1963, he was created by the dream team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

*Despite the length, this will be a brief rundown of important events in his  past that I believe led to his downfall and redemption. *

ORIGINS

Scott Summers was born to Maj. Christpher Summers of the U.S Air Force and his wife Katherine Ann. He was the oldest of their sons, his younger brother, Alex Summers, is known as Havok. One day, while on a flight with his family, a Shi’Ar Empire scout ship appeared and in an effort to hide their presence, set the Summers’ plane ablaze. Katherine took her two boys and strapped them together on the only available parachute, pushing them out the door of the plane. As the parachute deployed, some of the falling debris caused the parachute to catch fire. As they plummeted to the ground, Scott utilized his optic blasts to slow their descent. Upon impact with the ground he suffered a head injury that removed his ability to control his optic blasts. Unbeknownst to the two Summers boys, their parents were teleported onto the Shi’Ar ship before their plane went down. Their mother was also pregnant with another child at the time of their abduction. The third Summers boy, Gabriel, grew up to be known as the villain Vulcan.

Scott and Alex parachuting to safety

Scott and Alex suffered amnesia as a means of coping with the event and were hospitalized where they were looked after by Nathaniel Essex aka Mr. Sinister. Essex took an interest in Scott and believed him to be the stronger of the two. He arranged for Alex to be adopted separately to cause Scott to become emotionally vulnerable. One night while experiencing a nightmare, Scott opened his eyes and destroyed the roof of the building with his optic blasts. He then passed out and fell into a coma for a full year. When he awoke and recovered he was placed in an orphanage in Omaha Nebraska called State Home of Foundlings. Essex continued to experiment on Scott for his formative years and well into adolescence, continuously intervening if anyone ever came close to adopting him. Essex, disguised as a specialist, actually crafted Scott’s first pair of Ruby Quartz lenses.

After an accident where he lost control and obliterated a crane causing it to drop its load. An angry mob believed Scott tried to kill them, despite him saving them from the dropped debris. He was chased out of town and fled on a freight train. Scott fell in with a bad crowd, in particular Jack Winters aka Jack O’Diamonds, a notorious thief who wanted to use Scott’s abilities for crime. When Scott refused Jack would beat him until he agreed. Charles Xavier and the FBI tracked Scott and rescued him from Jack with Xavier offering him a full ride to his School for Gifted Youngsters, and the first member of the X-Men.

Classic suit

Scott was a natural leader but lacked the social skills to bond with his teammates. He fell in love with his teammate Jean Grey but was unable to express his feelings for a long time. Eventually Jean revealed she had a crush on Scott and the two of them began to date. Following the apparent death of professor Xavier, Scott was named Trustee of his Estate and ordered to continue his teaching and running the school. Xavier was revealed to be alive and in a subsequent mission Scott was reunited with his brother Alex who joined the X-Men as Havok. The team went through an overhaul and new members Storm and Wolverine were added to the roster.

THE PHOENIX SAGA

Arguably one of, if not THE most prominent X-Men arc, The Phoenix Saga sees Scott’s long time girlfriend Jean Grey become the cosmic entity “The Phoenix”. Without getting into too much detail, after a successful space mission, the X-Men are returning to Earth and must pass through a solar storm. Jean is possessed by the cosmic Phoenix Force and becomes the embodiment of the Phoenix, and uber powerful entity with cosmic level destructive power. The Phoenix then goes a little off the rails and decides to eat a sun, the Shi’ar Empire is having none of this and wants to kill her. The X-Men then battle with the Imperial Guard of the Shi’ar Empire to protect Jean/Phoenix from them. Realizing that she could never control the darkness inside of her, the Phoenix sacrifices herself on the moon leaving no trace of herself. Scott fell into a deep depression as he believed the love of his life was gone forever.

ROAD TO HIS DOWNFALL

Scott came out of his depressive state and met a woman named Madelyne Pryor, who bore an incredible resemble to Jean. Madelyne was a clone of Jean sent by Nathaniel Essex to seduce Scott and bear him an offspring that Essex could use for his own ends. Scott and Madelyne were married and she eventually bore him a child which was named Nathan Christopher Charles Summers aka Cable.

When Jean is discovered alive at the bottom of the bay in Jamaica where the Phoenix had first emerged, Scott packed his things and left his home in Anchorage with Madelyne and his son to be with Jean. When he met with Jean she explained that she believed the X-Men had strayed form Xavier’s dream for the team Together they founded the X-Factor with other original X-Men members and worked to help young mutants master their powers.

Eventually Scott and Jean are married and begin a life together while both remaining active members of the X-Men. After a particularly taxing battle involving Apocalypse and some Skrulls, Scott sacrificed himself to help stop Apocalypse. He was eventually found alive by Jean and his son Nathan in a village in Egypt. They helped to restore his psyche and cleanse Apocalypse’s influence from his mind. Scott began to grow more militarized and grimmer than he was before his death. He sought out counseling from new X-Men recruit Emma Frost, which only served for him to partake in a telepathic affair with Emma . Jean and Scott took a break and both contemplated on their relationship. Jean was killed by John Sublime who had taken control of Xorn and attacked the X-Men. As she died, Scott apologized for what he had done and how he had hurt Jean. Jean, seeing Scott’s sincerity, told Scott to move on and live his life without her. Scott and Emma Frost formalized their relationship and Scott found happiness for the first time in a long time.

Following the events of the House of M story line and “M Day”, mutants became an endangered species the world over. Scott and Emma opened the doors of Xavier’s school as a refugee camp for any mutants, no questions asked.

Militaristic Suit

Shortly after M-Day, The X-Men saved the city of San Francisco from a rogue mutant known as Goddess. As a thank you, the mayor and people of San Francisco offered the help re-establish the X-Men in their city. Scott and Emma took the offer and closed Xavier’s school relocating to a new compound in San Francisco. It was also during this time that Scott’s mentality moved from the ‘defend mutants at all costs’ to ‘kill or be killed’. Scott also formed the lethal covert team, the X-Force, and put Wolverine in charge as the team leader.

In the Utopia story arc, Osborn and his Dark Avengers were forced to stop rioting in San Francisco between mutants and humans following some devastating media footage depicting a mutant baby blowing up a small town. The Dark Avengers began abducting mutants and taking them to their Alcatraz facility where their powers were being siphoned into “Weapon Omega” aka Michael Pointer/ Guardian. Scott, appalled at what was going on, had Magik teleport the entire X-Force onto Alcatraz island where they did battle with the Dark Avengers and Dark X-Men to buy Magik time to teleport all the prisoners away. At the conclusion of the arc, Scott has ‘M Asteroid’ raised out of the pacific (where it had crashed several years before) and declared it Utopia, the home of all mutantkind. Magneto joined the X-Men on Utopia swearing his allegiance to Scott stating that he had done what both Magneto and Charles never could, unite all of mutantkind.

Scott believed it was his duty to protect mutantkind at any cost and he became ever more militaristic and dictator-like to protect those living in Utopia. When the villain Bastion opened a time portal allowing sentinels through in an attempt to kill Hope Summers (Scott’s daughter from an alternate future) Scott ordered the X-Force to get Hope to Utopia at any cost. In the end it cost both Nightcrawler and Cable their lives to get Hope to safety and stop Bastion. Out of guilt for Nightcrawler and Cable’s death, and the countless other mutants who died, Scott disbanded the X-Force and buried his son. Several long time X-Men members began to resent Scott for his militaristic attitude and blamed him for the deaths of fellow teammates. When a massive Sentinel was sent against Utopia, Scott and Wolverine got into an argument about how to defend the island. Scott believed that it was every mutant’s duty to defend their home, even the children. Logan believed that the older X-Men and X-Force members should defend the island and the children should be evacuated. This led to a bloody battle between Logan and Scott, which resulted in Logan, and several other members who agreed with him, leaving to go back and re-open Xavier’s school that had been closed when the X-Men relocated to San Francisco.

SCOTT’S DOWNFALL

AVENGERS VS X-MEN

Scott was training Hope very aggressively and refused to give her an answer as to why. She grew angry and flared up with the power of the Phoenix Force. Meanwhile, across the country in New York, Nova crashed to the ground and when they Avengers found him all he said was “it’s coming”. The Phoenix Force was once again burning a path through the cosmos on it’s way back to Earth. After Captain America asked Wolverine about the Phoenix, Wolverine told him and the rest of the Avengers about Hope Summers. After seeing Hope’s ‘Phoenix Power’, Scott became convinced that it’s arrival would herald the salvation of mutantkind. So, when Captain America and the Avengers showed up to Utopia demanding Hope as a precaution against the coming threat, Scott attacked Captain America.

Scott attacks Captain America

After seeing Scott blast Captain America into the ocean, a SHIELD Helicarrier uncloaked and the Avengers invaded Utopia. Hope seeing what she had caused, and fearful of the Phoenix Force, fled. Eventually, the X-Men surrendered to the Avengers, who then began making plans to apprehend Hope and take her into protective custody. Scott and the X-Men teleport away and begin their search for Hope before the Avengers. Scott goes to Westchester in an attempt to convince Wolverine to switch sides and recruit any other mutants to fight for their own kind. Hope flees to the moon in hopes to reduce the damage the Phoenix Force could cause should it find her on Earth. The Avengers and Scott discover her location and both head to the moon. Scott brings Colossus, Emma Frost, Magik, Namor and Wolverine. The Avengers arrive shortly before the Phoenix and another fight breaks out with Iron Man trying to make a weapon to defeat the Phoenix. He inadvertently causes the Phoenix to split into 5 pieces, with each piece possessing one of the X-Men. Unable to defeat the X-Men, the Avengers regroup to come up with a new plan while the “Phoenix Five” take Hope back to Earth to “prepare her”.

Phoenix Five

With the power of the Phoenix, the Five begin reshaping the world to make it better. They outlaw wars and provide the necessities of life to everyone under their rule. The Avengers oppose them and even convince Hope to come with them, which prompts Cyclops to declare “No More Avengers”. Namor tracks the Avengers to Wakanda and went to confront them on his own, when he is beaten, his portion of the Phoenix Force leaves him and enters the others, strengthening them. The Avengers hide Hope in K’un L’un (home of the Iron Fist), in a different dimension, to buy time to come up with a plan. Colossus and Magik get into an argument and knock each other out, further strengthening Scott and Emma. Scott uses his immense power to break the dimensional barriers and enter K’un L’un to get Hope back.

Hope, appalled at what her father has done, banishes him to the moon. This pushes Scott further over the edge, knowing he could win if he had more power, he returned to Utopia to find Emma. Though he is unable to attack her, the intervention of Professor Xavier and the Avengers ignites another battle. As the battle rages, it begins to turn in favour of the Avengers and X-Men who are trying to stop Scott and Emma. Scott knocks Emma out and absorbs her portion of the Phoenix Force. As the sole owner of the Force, Scott goes insane and becomes the Dark Phoenix. When Xavier tries to shut his mind down, to end the fight, Scott loses control and kills him. Hope and Scarlet Witch manage to exorcise the Phoenix Force from Scott and use it’s power to “restart mutantkind”. They reignited the X gene on the planet allowing mutants to be born again.

Scott kills Xavier

MILITARISTIC REVOLUTIONARY

Scott was imprisoned for his actions in the Avengers vs. X-Men story line and remained there for some time until mutant hating humans killed his only friend and fellow mutant. Magneto and a small team destroyed the prison and broke Scott out, setting him on his new path. Scott went around liberating unjustly imprisoned mutants, helping them to master their abilities and offering him a spot on his new team. As he rescued more and more people, the citizens on the street started calling him a revolutionary and sporting signs and shirts saying “Cyclops was right”. This brought him into conflict once again with the Avengers who attempted to bring him in for his past crimes. Scott fled with the help of some other mutants and returned to Westchester and the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning.

Cyclops vs. Wolverine

During the Incursion events leading up to Secret Wars Scott revealed that he was in possession of a phoenix egg and was willing to use it if necessary. At the battle of the final Incursion, when Earth-1610 (The Ultimate Marvel Universe) is on a collision course with Earth-616 (Main Marvel Universe) Scott uses the Phoenix Egg. At the battle of Manhattan Scott bonds completely with the Phoenix Force, now in full control of it’s power, Scott uses it to obliterate the forces of Earth-1610 and the Children of Tomorrow. As the Worlds are lost, Scott is transported onto the Illuminati’s Life Raft where he survives the smashing of the two universes and the subsequent emergence into Battleworld.

As the heroes on the life raft are forced to fight the Cabal on Battleworld, God Doom arrives to quell the fighting. When Scott attempts to use the full power of the Phoenix Force to destroy Doom, Doom shrugs off the hit and proceeds to snap Scott’s neck, killing him.

When Franklin and Reed Richards remade the multiverse Cyclops was resurrected along with all the other heroes and villains where he joined the X-Men once again. While his team was responding to a call on Muir Island, Scott came into contact with some trace remains of the Terrigen Mists. The Mists had been released by Black Bolt and his brother Maximus to spur the creation of more Inhumans, the only downside, the Mists are fatal to Mutants. When Scott was exposed to the mists, he began to die. He collapsed into the arms of Emma and pleaded with her to help him. He pleaded for it ” Not to end like this” before dying in her arms. Wracked with grief Emma used her powers to make a mental projection of Scott still alive and well. This projection of Scott was able to reverse the effects of the mists and stood down a large contingent of Inhumans. The projection of Scott was killed by Black Bolt, Leader/King of the Inhumans, and was mourned as a hero by the X-Men and the mutant community as a whole.

Scott’s Headstone on the School grounds

RESURRECTION

Teenage Cable from the not too distant future returned to the current timeline and paired with Paul Douek from Stark Industries to find a way to bring his father back. Utilizing leftover energy from the Phoenix Force, the duo were able to resurrect Cyclops. Scott needed time after his resurrection to examine the points in his life that led to his downfall and reflect on his choices and actions. During his reflection he was visited by Magneto who delivered some hard hitting advice, which helped Scott to realize his error and what he had become before his death.

Scott’s inevitable downfall came from him constantly seeing that the pacifist approach of Charles didn’t work. While Charles would advocate for action when necessary, he preferred words to fists. Watching the love of his life die (repeatedly), being betrayed by his father figure and having to bury his own son, Scott slowly lost his grip on his moral compass. He began to think that everything could be solved with the proper application of force and that by showing Mutants as a strong people, they would be respected. While his tactics worked sometimes, most of his actions caused people to distrust mutants less and less, causing them to become violent and Scott to respond to their violence in kind.

Scott’s Resurrection

Scott began to see himself as the only person actively working to keep mutants safe and felt he needed to resort to aggressive tactics to maintain that strength. He lost long time allies like Beast and Wolverine because of his inability to see the faults in his actions and caused the death of dozens of fellow mutants in his militaristic ideals.

Scott realizes the error of his past actions
Scott admits his faults

Deep down Scott is a good person, he’s flawed, but that’s what makes him such a compelling character. You need people like Superman and Captain America to always be the voice of reason and to fight the good fight, but flawed characters that make very real and relatable mistakes are more compelling and draw more comparisons to real life. For all his bluster and grand standing, at his core Scott is a good man who wants to do the right thing. He tries to keep control so he can always see the outcome and never be surprised; even though that doesn’t always happen. He knows that Xavier’s teachings won’t work in the long run but neither will militaristic action and he’s constantly trying to find a balance between the two in order to etch out a place for his people in the world.

There you have it! Cyclops’ fall and rebirth into the hero he once was! See you next time!

Secret Empire – Captain America’s Greatest Betrayal

“We were supposed to be heroes. We were supposed to stand for something. It’s hard to say when it all started going wrong, but at some point, we let the fight become about us, not the world we’d sworn to protect. We found ourselves divided, and under siege. So many threats, so many dangers but the one that would end us, was the one we trusted the most.

Funny how the world can change in a day. How something so horrible can sneak up on you so quickly. And Stark was right. We’d won so many times against impossible odds. We started to take it for granted. Started to believe we were destined to come out on top. But something felt different this time.

We’d been pushed beyond our breaking point, slowly, methodically. And just as we were thinking we’d almost survived it, they struck the real blow.

As the battle began, there had already been suspicions. Whispers. Some knew who it must be, Hydra’s New Secret Leader. There was only one person who could’ve orchestrated all this, after all. Even still, they refused to believe… Until they saw it with their own eyes.

And so we fought. We fought because we believed we were right… And we fell because we were wrong.

We thought we were there to stop him, but the truth is… We were right where they wanted us to be. They had made plans for us… Found ways to turn our most powerful against us, again and again.

Later, when the stories were told, they’d all remark on the same thing.. how quickly it happened. We thought we were so strong, so unbeatable. That we could never collapse so quickly. So completely. So when we did, all we could do was watch it unfold, helpless as the day we were born. And with the world slipping away around us, we gazed into the face of our enemy, finally seeing them for what they really were.

They were stronger.

They were more powerful.

In that moment…They were worthy.”

Victorious Cap lifts Mjolnir

This was the moment, the moment when all the readers of Marvel Comics and the heroes contained within knew, that the world they knew had changed forever…

Captain America has been one of the most stalwart comic characters in all of history. He never wavered in his beliefs and he could bring out the best in everyone regardless of circumstances. So why did Marvel use this opportunity to make him evil? To answer that we have to go back to the prelude to Secret Empire.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The First thing you have to understand is that the history that we know since the beginning of Marvel Comics publication, was in fact false. The Nazis and Hydra were the victors of WWII. Captain America was a double agent trained by Kraken and Madam Hydra to act as the Allies’ saviour while secretly providing the Axis with information that could be used to win the war. This worked for pretty much the entire war before Cap’s double nature was discovered, and resulted in a much different world than we know. The ace in the hole was this, The Cosmic Cube. Now after the allies had driven Cap away, they had discovered the Cosmic Cube and its reality warping powers. (The Cosmic Cube and the Tesseract from the MCU are two VERY different artifacts).

Following his exile from Allied territory, Captain America had arrived to Japan high up in the mountains and entered a cave where he was greeted by his father figure/trainer Kraken. Kraken explained that this was where Hydra had begun and where it will continue its legacy. Captain America is led inside where he sees a pool and an old man stirring the waters. He is shown a vision of the allies preparing the Cosmic Cube to alter history and he is told that by submerging himself in the pool he will be protected from the change. Kraken went on to say that he would wake up in a world unfamiliar to him but that he would retain all of his memories and ideals.

As the allies began their change, Captain America submerged in the pool and was bombarded with memories and history that collided with his own. He awoke in a world where the allies had won and where he had been lost in the arctic for 70 years following his foiling of Red Skull’s final plan.

Now while there were various ticks and nods to Cap’s true nature through the beginning of the run by Nick Spencer. If you read the culmination of the previous 2016 event titled Avengers: Standoff! Cap’s change came as less of a surprise (Red Skull influenced the sentient Cosmic Cube ‘Kobik”, to rewrite Cap’s history making him a champion of Hydra as it restored Cap to his youthful appearance). In the first issue of Marvel’s new Steve centered comic run titled Captain America: Steve Rogers,is when his allegiance alteration is confirmed. In the final panels of Captain America: Steve Rogers #1 (July 2016), Steve pushes his longtime ally Jack Flag from an airplane to fall to his apparent death, Rogers then turns to Dr. Selvig and says “Hail Hydra”.

Cap’s official turning point

WHAT CAME AS A RESULT

The opening to Secret Empire showed us one of the most complete and utter defeats of the Marvel heroes we have ever seen. The Guardians of the Galaxy, The Ultimates, Hyperion, Quasar, Captain Marvel and her Alpha Flight Space Program are trying to stop a Chitauri invasion of Earth and are fighting a losing battle. While they can beat the Chitauri en masse, the aliens just keep coming in endless waves. Iron Man and Iron Heart are attempting to repair the planetary shield to stop the invasion but they are not having any luck. The Defenders, Uncanny Avengers and some of the X-Men are attempting to quell a breakout from the Supervillain rehab center Pleasant Hill, with some success. One of the SHIELD helicarriers has gone missing and Hydra forces are waging a large attack against SHIELD all around the globe.

Nitro (the supervillain famous for starting the Civil War event, the REAL one, not the MCU version), exits the facility and proceeds to detonate himself in downtown New York City causing massive damage. The rest of the villains are teleported away while Baron Zemo and Blackout drop the entirety of the island of New York into the Darkforce dimension bringing on an endless night. The President then awards Steve Rogers (the Director of SHIELD) control over the United Stated military to help combat these threats. Once Steve has the power of the United States Armed Forces behind him, he sets his plan into action. He activates the planetary shield locking Captain Marvel and the ‘heavy hitters’ outside the planet at the mercy of the Chitauri. He crashes the missing helicarrier, now filled with Hydra soldiers, into another helicarrier and uses the hypnotic suggestion of Dr. Faustus to cause the defending SHIELD agents to become hypnotized and unwilling to fight. Iron Heart and her Tony Stark AI realize that the next target would be Washington D.C and have all the heroes rally there to defend it. Hydra sieges the city in an attempt to destabilize the government and the spirit of the American people. Steve Rogers, Now Hydra Supreme Commander, arrives and asks the Avengers to stop fighting and join him. When they refuse, his army moves in and attacks. He uses undisclosed methods to take out Thor, Vision and Scarlet Witch while the rest of the heroes are slowly beaten, one by one. As he stands victorious above them he reaches down and lifts Mjolnir high into the air.

RAMIFICATIONS

This turn for the The Captain left a sour taste in a lot of fans mouths. Not only did they take one of the greatest heroes in all of comics and turn him into a Nazi, they also ripped down everything he stood for just to get some more sales and provide even a small semblance of competition to DC Comics with their Rebirth Initiative.

The bit that really stuck with most fans was the blatant disregard for the original creators of the character. Joseph Henry “Joe” Simon born Hymie Simon and Jack “King” Kirby born Jacob Kurtzberg, who created the character, were both of them members of the Jewish faith, both of their families having experienced persecution at the hands of the Nazis in WWII. By turning their creation of a man who stood for what was right and fought for the little man, literally against the Nazis, into a Nazi commander who took over the world, showed blatant disrespect to them.

Steve Rogers as Supreme Commander of Hydra

With all the backlash that Marvel experienced after writer Nick Spencer affirmed that this was not some trick, and that this was the original Captain America, they were (in my opinion) forced to rectify the situation. I won’t spoil what they did, but it kind of just sugar coated the entire ordeal and really ended up making the entire event a terrible run. Not only did they sugarcoat the run, but they kept the Hydra Cap! He still exists in the main Marvel universe (Earth-616) and is going to stir some shit up later on, they foreshadow that at the end of the run.

There’s a lot of things that I’m not a fan of with this event but one thing I can say for sure is that despite its flaws, it’s incredibly well written. The exposition and character development in this story is top notch, and as made evident from the opening speech of this post which was taken directly from Issue # 0, it delivers some hard hitting dialogue.

Cap vs. Cap

When all is said and done, the main betrayal of Captain America is not to any one hero, his long time friends and allies or the universe as a whole, it was to the fans and the legacy of the character. Marvel has worked very hard to rectify this situation and bring the faith of the fans back. I know that, personally, I haven’t purchased any Marvel comics since the release of Secret Empire because of how far out in left field they took it. I will be purchasing in the future, especially the new Moon Knight run but with their new Legacy imprint, I feel like they’re finally listening to the fans and going back to what worked for them for decades.

Hydra Cap armoured for battle

Godzilla: King of Monsters

Yesterday we were given another trailer for the upcoming monster mashup of Godzilla: King of The Monsters. It provided more exposition into the plot of the film and some more concrete shots of the kaiju that will be making an appearance in 2019. The first trailer was very cryptic and provided very little in ways of actual monster shots. The most standout piece of the first trailer was Charles Dance’s (of Game of Thrones fame) epic line “Long Live the King”.  This time instead of a very whispered “Let them Fight” from Ken Watanabe we get an equally as hushed “No.. we would be his” in what appears to be a testimony delivered before several senators. I will say this, epic one liners tend to be the bread and butter of this new “monster-verse” that Legendary Pictures has created.

For those who haven’t seen the trailer, check it out right here:

Instead of giving a rundown of the trailer, I’m going to give some slight background to the various Kaiju in the film. Let’s start with the boss himself/herself Godzilla.

GODZILLA

Godzilla 2014 movie poster

Along with the rest of the Kaiju for this film, Godzilla is dubbed a ‘Titan’. These Titans have existed on Earth since primordial times and have been responsible for keeping the planet spinning. As referenced in the first trailer there were several extinction level events that were halted or started (potentially) by these titans. in the first film we are told that the first sightings of Godzilla dated back to WWII specifically the Pacific campaign. We are told that the nuclear tests in the French Polynesian Pacific weren’t tests, and that in fact the government and military were attempting to kill Godzilla before it could cause any damage. In the first film Godzilla is noted to be exactly 100.8 meters tall (330.71 feet for Americans), which apart from the Netflix anime Godzilla, is the tallest one to date. Godzilla possesses the ability to swim and remain submerged for quite a long time. Extremely strong and quick thinking, Godzilla was coined the ‘King of the Monsters’ in several of Toho’s films as well as at the conclusion of the 2014 film Godzilla by Legendary Pictures. Godzilla’s ultimate attack is its Atomic Breath. This attack focuses atomic energy which is stored in Godzilla’s body releasing it in a blueish/white flame that has devastating power. The attack is preceded by the spines and fins on Godzilla’s back lighting up with the same blueish/white glow before the discharge. There’s not much that can be said for Godzilla that most people don’t already know. Having been around since the first film in 1954, Godzilla has become a pop culture icon and known by several generations of people the world over.

RODAN

Rodan concept art for upcoming Godzilla: King of The Monsters

Rodan first appeared in the 1956 film titled Rodan. His first appearance with Godzilla was in the 1964 film Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, in every depiction Rodan resembles an irradiated Pteranodon. His original Japanese name ‘Radon’ is a contraction of Pteranodon and also represents the word radiation. As previously stated, Rodan resembles a large irradiated Pteranodon with a brownish/burgundy body, spiky chest and two or three horns atop the back his head. He has a large wingspan measuring between 150-200m (492.13 – 656.17 feet).  He has been shown to walk upright on his two hind legs. His legs end in powerful talons that are capable of grasping large heavy objects (like Godzilla) and holding onto them in flight. In Godzilla: King of Monsters, Rodan apparently lives in a volcano that goes by the name of Devil’s Nest somewhere in South America. His wings are so powerful that they create a whirlwind and back draft capable of wiping the earth clean in his wake. It is unclear if he will be an ally or enemy to Godzilla but lots of the footage from the first and second trailers shows the military actively trying to shoot Rodan down, with little success. I never watched any of the old films with Rodan but a giant flying dinosaur is okay in my books.

MOTHRA

Mothra mid dive

The third contender in the giant monster battle is none other than Mothra herself. Known also as ‘The Queen of Monsters’, Mothra is a Divine Moth and frequent ally of Godzilla. Typically cast as a heroic figure, Mothra is one of the few Kaiju that openly embraces humanity and tries to protect them. She resembles a colossal Imago Moth and has been known to reproduce offspring. Her wingspan in Lengendary’s Godzilla:King of Monsters is estimated to be roughly 244.75 meters (802.99 feet). Typically in the Toho universe, Mothra has resided on her own island but in Legendary’s universe they have marked her domain as the Yunnan Rainforest in the People’s Republic of China. A small blurb released as part of the marketing campaign for the movie has stated that ‘Mothra possesses the ability to emit beta wave bioluminescence that can be used to illuminate the patterns on her wings or focused in very powerful and blinding destructive ‘God Rays”. We are shown Mothra’s bioluminescence in the trailer as well as her in some sort of dive during a (presumed) climactic point in the film. Like Rodan I never watched any of the classic Mothra movies or even the older Godzilla films. I learned about her through pop culture and her inclusion in this upcoming film.

KING GHIDORAH

Ghidorah as he faces of against Godzilla in 2019’s Godzilla: King of The Monsters

Now, I’m going to be straight with you, a three headed flying dragon that shoots lightning…I would call him king as well. Traditionally Ghidorah was the main antagonist of Godzilla and various other Kaiju throughout history. He has had a couple different origins throughout his film run, most commonly he is an alien that travels the universe killing planets at his leisure; although, he has also been shown to be a fusion of three monsters called Dorats as a result of a future nuclear explosion. In his first appearance (and what appears to be similar to Legendary’s upcoming movie) Ghidorah arrived to earth in a meteor before his rampage across much of Japan.  Mothra attempted to stop him but was savagely beaten by the dragon, Godzilla and Rodan then allied together with Mothra and expelled Ghidorah from the planet. He is a massive creature. In Legendary’s Monster-verse, Ghidorah stands 158.8m (521 feet) tall and has roughly a 100-150m (328.08 – 492.13 feet) wingspan. In the trailers we are shown him frozen in a massive glacier which is where he must have been for the millions of years since the ‘Titans’ last walked the earth. In the film they will call him’Monster Zero’ but apparently they will address that ancient civilizations called him ‘Ghidorah’. It’s clear he is the main villain of the film as the second trailer shows him and Godzilla facing off against one another in a climactic battle sequence.

PLOT PREDICTION

Based on what I’ve read and found out about the various Kaiju to make an appearance in the film, I think that while the earth will be facing an extinction level event that Ghidorah is going to be unleashed. The rest of the Titans will be attempting to use their powers to fix the extinction event and Ghidorah is going to show up and just muck everything up. Initially Rodan will be an antagonist but once Ghidorah shows up he’ll ally with Godzilla and Mothra to take on the bigger threat. We are shown a brief clip in the trailer that shows several squadrons of fighter jets over Washington airspace. In the clouds you can make out the image of Rodan as well as the massive image of Ghidorah when the lightning strikes illuminating the clouds. Ultimately I don’t really care for a plot or storyline, I just wanna see some giant monster beat downs!

Due out on May 31, 2019, this epic film is going to set the stage for the next film Kong v. Godzilla in 2020!
